TRIBUTES HAVE BEEN paid to a young Irish woman who died suddenly while trekking on Mount Kilimanjaro.
The woman has been named locally as Majella Duffy (35) from Fermoy in Co Cork.
She is believed to have travelled to Kilimanjaro in East Africa in order to raise money and awareness for heart conditions.
The expedition company Earth’s Edge released a statement on its Facebook page saying that one of its clients had passed away yesterday morning.
The company said that the woman had died at 8.15am yesterday morning local time (6.15am Irish time) on Kilimanjaro in Africa.
“Our thoughts and condolences are with her family,” the Facebook post reads.
We will provide further information on this incident in due course.
“A beautiful, genuine person”
Local Fermoy councillor Deirdre O’Brien – who had worked with Majella in Laya Healthcare – said that the local community and her workmates were shocked at the news.
“She was a beautiful, genuine person. An inspiration in everything she did,” said O’Brien.
There was shock when we found out.
O’Brien said that Laya had been offering support for workers who were upset by the news.
“It’s very sad when someone was out there doing good and then they are taken away in their prime,” she said.
According to its website, Earth’s Edge specialises in adventurous and challenging expeditions in remote areas throughout the world.
A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs said that it was aware of the case and providing consular assistance to the woman’s family.
